Episode 7: Feeding Frenzy

“Each day my students and I take small steps, but to succeed I must wean them off what they crave.  For as long as their addiction stands and their ravenous nature continues to boil, they will be a threat not only to others, but to themselves.”

In the basement the vampires are all extremely agitated.  Murdoch enters with a large container on wheels, and they all jostle to get as close as possible.  The security code fails twice, but finally opens on the third try and the vamps grasp desperately at the blood bags inside.  Murdoch tells them that the rations should last them until the regular shipment arrives, but they are not listening; only interested in getting as much blood down their throats as possible.  Exasperated, Murdoch asks them if they have learnt nothing from the Experiment.

Having finished their allotments, the vamps discuss the last meals they had before they were turned.  Murdoch enters and tells them that their progress has earned two of them a trip into town, to interact with and observe the mortals there.  If the trial goes well, the rules will be loosened for all of them.  Essie and Marty win the lottery and gleefully head out.

In the Solarium Drew is moping over not winning the lottery, as it would have enable him to properly meet Sherry.  Merrill tells him that perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be, but he rudely rebukes her.  She tells him that he is obsessed before storming off.  Murdoch stops her as she stomps through his office.  He tells her that finding someone to love is a difficult quest, and she asks him if it is worth the pain.  He tells her that the way to cure an obsession is to confront, not by wanting, but by giving.

Essie and Marty enter the roadhouse in town.  She orders a tomato juice while asks for two burgers, extremely rare.  Across the room Nick catches sight of Essie and is immediately determined to get close.

Back at Mansbridge Merrill tells Drew that she can hook him up with Sherry.  When he asks her why she suddenly wants to help, she replies that she understands loneliness too. At the roadhouse Essie has noticed Nick’s attention.  She thinks he’s an idiot, but decides to play along.

Merrill uses the internal phones to call Sherry.  Perfectly mimicking Murdoch’s voice, she asks Sherry to meet ‘him’ in the library to discuss an assignment. Essie dances as Marty receives his order.  Essie calls Nick over to dance, and Marty starts a conversation with his very bloody burgers.

Karl comes into Murdoch’s office demanding more blood and the doctor tells him that he knows the rules.  Karl becomes increasingly agitated and tells Murdoch that he has a burning sensation in his chest, who suddenly becomes worried.

In the library Merrill tells Drew that Sherry is on her way, but they only have 15 minutes.  She goes outside to stand guard when she is approached by a nosey Malcolm.  She fobs him off with a story about being extra security.  Inside, Drew introduces himself to Sherry.  She tells him that he is very familiar and asks him what he’s doing here.  Not getting any straight answers from him she asks if he is always so mysterious.  He replies that it is in his blood.

Murdoch examines Karl, whose condition is worsening.  He vamps out and attacks, but Murdoch gets him into a choke hold, and renders him unconscious.

At the roadhouse Marty is still talking to his food, and starting to attract attention.  He vamps out and attacks his food, baring his bloody fangs at two nearby girls, who understandably scream and run.  As the other patrons rush out Essie comes over to rebuke Marty for his behaviour, but as she reaches him she doubles over in pain, vamping out herself.

Murdoch makes a frantic call to the company that supplies the blood.  They have sent him the wrong shipment.  He then rushes off to town to find Essie and Marty. In the library Drew starts to feel the effects of the bad blood.  He vamps out and hides behind a bookshelf.

Essie and Marty start to threaten Nick until Murdoch enters.  He tells them that they had the wrong blood, and offers them a bag of the real thing. After they feed Essie erases Nick’s memory, and the three head back to Mansbridge. Drew can no longer contain himself and leaves Sherry talking to thin air.  He and Merrill rush downstairs.

Later, in the basement, Murdoch assures his night students that such a mistake will never happen again, and the vamps discuss Marty and Essie’s visit to town.

“The taming of the ancient urges is a constant struggle for my vampire students.  However, underneath their ravenous nature lies the simple needs of all teenagers; to be needed, to be loved.  But this bonding that could mean so much, is still far off and the bloodlust that controls the wheel of their lives continues to hold its grip.”
