Episode 3: In Your Dreams Sherry walks down a staircase clad in pink satin, mist swirling around her feet. Drew takes her hand and they dance. His eyes suddenly turn red and he hisses. Sherry screams and Drew wakes in his coffin with a gasp. OPENING CREDITS Vampires dont know how to love, they only know craving. In the basement Karl is trying to chat up Essie, and they playfully banter back and forth. For vampires, courtship is a deadly ritual of stalking and preying. Humans are also known to stalk and prey. Upstairs Nick is still bugging Sherry. He says he just wants to hang out, but makes an arse of himself when he knocks her drink all over her work. But despite their predatory natures, it is possible for vampires to fall in love. In vampire lore they call this person The One. Drew is spying on Sherry when Murdoch calls him to his office to remind him that crossing over into the day school is forbidden. Drew feels that the rules will cost him his only chance of happiness with Sherry. Murdoch replies that in that case, it isnt meant to be. In the basement Merrill confronts Drew over his obsession with Sherry. He says that he cannot help feeling drawn to her. Merrill replies that it is not love hes feeling, but craving. She tells him that he cannot have a relationship with someone who doesnt even know he exists. Mimi and Sherry are doing their nails in their room when Malcolm comes in with an anonymous letter for Sherry. It is a poem from Drew, and later, while she is working in the library, Drew leaves her a rose. Back in her room someone has filled the freezer with ice cream, and Mimi remarks that someone is definitely after Sherry. Nick comes in and Sherry assumes that he is the one leaving her the gifts. She tells him that she may give him another chance. Listening in, Drew is incensed. The next day Nick is happy to take the credit for all of Drews hard work. He tries to kiss Sherry but she backs off, inviting him for a picnic in the library the following evening. That night in the Solarium Essie and Karl play chess. She taunts him, saying that the winner will get her heart, but then cheats by sending a mental suggestion to Karl for his next move causing him to lose. Marty offers to help Drew connect with Sherry, telling him that Merrill has the ability to Dreamslide, allowing him to enter Sherrys dreams and make himself known to her. Drew unsurprisingly agrees, but Merrill is not happy about it. She tells him that Dreamsliding is too dangerous and can mentally damage the dreamer. He says that all he wants is to make a connection with Sherry, to let her know he exists, even if its only in her dreams. Merrill backs down, although Essie warns her against it. Standing over the sleeping Sherry, Drew enters her dreams. Snow is falling and Sherry is the ballerina in a musical box. She recites Drews letter as she spins. He tries to tell her that he is the man to rescue her from her loneliness, but she cant hear him. A young girl appears and offers him a blue marble, then asks him to watch her skip backwards. She tells him her name is Sherry and he asks to see her older, but Merrill calls him back telling him they are late for class. The vamps are working in the basement under the watchful eye of Dr Murdoch. Merrill asks Drew what he saw in Sherrys dreams. He explains that she couldnt hear him, and Merrill explains that it sometimes happens in Dreamsliding, you are invisible at first. He then tells her about meeting the young Sherry, and shows her the marble she gave him. Merrill is suddenly worried, telling him that they must put it back. He asks her why, What can one little marble do? The next day Sherry tells Mimi that she had a strange dream, suddenly realising that she is stuttering, something that she hasnt done since she was a little girl. Her father took her to a speech therapist who gave her a blue marble. She was to think about the marble every time she felt nervous, and her stutter went away. Later that day, Nick asks Sherry if she is still on for their picnic. She says she no longer wants to, and he makes fun of her stammer. Watching behind the mirror Drew realises he screwed up, and they need to put it right. Essie starts with the I-told-you-sos and makes to leave, but Merrill asks her to stay put, they will need her help. Studying in the library Sherry sees the lights flicker. Essie comes up behind her and puts her in a trance. Merrill tells Drew that he must give the marble to little Sherry and no one else. In Sherrys dream everything has changed. Lightening forks through tangled trees. Little Sherrys eyes are blackened by running mascara and there is blood red gloss on her lips. She welcomes Drew by name and offers him a rose. Over his shoulder we can see Nick sitting in the freezer, covered in ice. She starts taunting Drew, asking him if Sherry is having a nightmare, or if he is Sherrys nightmare. He asks her who she is, she replies with a rendition of Im a Little Teapot and jabs him in the stomach doubling him over. Now we see eye to eye. Arent you gonna give me my marble? Suddenly the older Sherry is there. She asks for the marble as well, and the young Sherry throws a fit shouting that its hers. He hands older Sherry the marble and the scene changes. They stand hand in hand, Sherry again in pink satin. She remarks on how cold his hands are. He tells her that he has to go, but she asks him to stay to watch the sunrise with her. He explains that hes not supposed to be here. She smiles and tells him that dawn is her favourite time of day. He replies when the sun chases the darkness away, and Sherry realises that he wrote the letter, not Nick. Placing his hand in the sunlight, Drews joy is evident as he tells Sherry that he hasnt seen the sun rise in years. She quotes a part of his letter, that he lives in darkness, he replies except when Im with you. They are about to kiss when Merrill calls him back. He asks Sherry to remember him, and the dream fades. When vampires feel desire, they cannot rest until their hunger has been satisfied. Drew is telling Merrill about his walk in the sunlight with Sherry. She asks what else happened and he tells her how the young Sherry had changed, her voice had become scary and she called him by name. Merrill remarks that someone must have followed him into the dream. But real love is patient; it gives life instead of feeding from it. When a vampire discovers the One, this difference becomes crystal clear. In the basement Marty asks the other vamps to watch him skip backwards.
