Episode 2: There's a New Vamp in Town

“The vampire is by nature a lone wolf, predatory.  Therefore, any sudden temptation to join the human community is suspect, and dangerous.”

Dwight, the Mansbridge night watchman, comes into Murdoch’s office with a videotape, sure that he has seen something move very swiftly across the screen.  Murdoch says that he can’t see anything and dismisses Dwight’s idea that the building is haunted, finally managing to evict him from the room.  Murdoch plays back the tape in slow motion.  The night schoolers have been on the prowl, but there is another, unfamiliar person on the tape, smiling up at the camera.  “So our last student has arrived.

Opening credits

In the basement Drew is reading poetry.  Merrill interrupts and he tells her he wants to be left alone.  He is on probation for interfering in Sherry and Nick’s argument.

In their room, Mimi asks Sherry when Nick will be out of the hospital.  Sherry replies that she doesn’t care, he deserved what he got.  Although Nick told her he was pushed, Sherry doesn’t believe him.  Drew listens in as the girls talk about what Sherry is looking for in a man.

Murdoch pulls him from his reverie by gathering the vamps together.  He tells them that they must learn to be less solitary creatures, and with that, announces the final student of the Experiment.  Marty makes quite an entrance.

Later, Merrill explains to Marty that the Elders have given them a wonderful chance to be more than they are.  All Marty cares about is when the next meal is coming.  Merrill tells him that the blood allotments are given out at 1am every night, followed by lessons.  Marty asks Drew about the day students, who replies that they are off limits.  Marty then starts bugging Karl, telling him he can smell the lingering humanity in him.  Karl explains that he was only turned the previous Halloween, and that his family home is not far from Mansbridge.  Essie is going through her wardrobe and Marty tries to put on the charm.  She really isn’t impressed, so Marty decides to go back to annoying Drew.  They trade barbed words and Marty decides that what everyone needs is a road trip.  Karl and Essie agree while Merrill tries to put them off, reminding them that they are not allowed to leave the school.  Merrill asks Drew to stop them, but he isn’t interested, preferring to listen in to Mimi and Sherry.  When Mimi manages to convince Sherry to come out with her for some fun, Drew decides to follow them, much to Merrill’s chagrin.  The three vamps manage to avoid Dr Murdoch with Marty’s telekinesis, while the mortal girls dodge the security cameras.

The bar is crowded and a Goth girl, Samantha, introduces herself to the vamps, showing a particular interest in Marty.  Entering soon after, Mimi starts eyeing up the guys in the room.  Drew comes in and watches Sherry who is sitting bored by the bar.  A guy starts bugging her, and she dumps a basket of pretzels on his head before rushing out, Drew right behind her.  Marty starts taking the mick out of the guy who decides to start a fight by.  He pushes Marty who retaliates with a wave good bye before easily shoving him across the room.  Samantha is very impressed.

Sherry and Drew arrive back at Mansbridge and she rushes to her room, bumping into Murdoch on the way.  He warns her that when he can no longer give him the benefit of the doubt, he will have to ask her to leave.

Drew enters the basement and finds that the others have already returned, albeit with a guest.  Marty has brought Samantha back and intends to give her a taste of the “real thing”.  Marty uses his telekinesis again and she starts to freak out.  Drew tells Marty to let her go and the boys square up to one another, eyes red and fangs bared.  Merrill manages to talk them down, explaining that this animalistic behaviour is exactly what the Fury wants of them, but that they have been given a chance to do better.  Essie hypnotises Samantha to forget her ordeal, and Merrill escorts her out.  Murdoch writes in his journal while Drew thinks of Sherry.

“The Mansbridge Experiment hinges on time.  It is the great measure.  With time a community can be formed, a community that heals all wounds, forever.”
